The Count Down...

I wrote in my booklet 'On Wester-Ross' ...

'It seems to me that far too often you and I and humankind in general have attempted and are still attempting to deal in ugly, dangerous, short term ways with major long term issues. We all know what these are. Simply in the interests of fashion or lifestyle or habit do we really need to degrade or to deplete - whether deliberately, accidentally or through sad apathy - so many other forms of life, so much of Earth's material 'resource'? Because we have the capability, do we really believe it a good idea to attempt the genetic re-engineering of life forms that have taken 'nature' so much evolutionary time to develop? Perhaps the root question; just where and to what do we think our own unbridled fecundity is actually leading? After hundreds of thousands of years, five hundred millions of us populated the planet a century ago. Now it's six thousand five hundred millions, and counting? The amount of earth's 'resource' that we aspire to - or think is needed by - each one of us rising much faster even than that?

I wonder why this last issue seems hardly ever to be considered or even mentioned by those who purport to govern, to remedy the ills of the human condition by wars, by financial sleight of hand, by electoral trickery ...
